things i miss from the southwest:
- those miniature tornados that have exactly one plastic bag caught in them
- real mexican food
- 350 days of sunshine
- 10 days of rains powerful enough to tear down powerlines
- the downed powerline PSAs that use cgi to turn the live line into a rattlesnake
- the fact that tourists always seem to pick that week of rain to visit and complain about it
- saladitos on a lemon half
- the fact that every front yard was lawned out in rocks and pebbles instead of grass
- and the fact that if a neighborhood street fight broke out the risk of getting stoned to death was real
- tamarind candies
- barbecue cookouts in november
- there’s always mountains in the distance, tall and blue
- sometimes the mountains are on fire
- hearing rumors about another school cancelling classes because of mountain lions
- or because of mountain fires. equally as likely
- lots of things were on fire pretty much all the time actually
- fire drills at school EVERY week
- never let your guard down
- the sun is watching
- waiting
i forgot the number 1 thing i miss about living in the southwest, the one i took the most for granted. i miss the sky; more specifically, i miss the moon and the stars
