Lighting cigarettes with the cabbie’s fake gun that he appropriated from NSY once the case was solved. He would light one, have a drag or two and then light another, Mrs Hudson would not scold him as she knew John wasn’t home. Mrs Hudson collected a few unfinished butts as evidence, she tells John, John scolds him.
