YES!
Ace and aro people part of the LGBTQ+ community (if they want to be) 💛💛💛💛✨
[Jeffrey Marsh: So there’s been this big debate lately; are aro and ace people part of the lgbt movement? Are asexual, aromantic, and some other people under our umbrella? And the answer is…yes! Of course you are! Of course you are welcome. Of course!
And there are two things to remember with that so are ace and aro people part of the community? Yes…if you want to be. Right? I am not ace, I’m not aro and so it’s not up to me to decide who I wanna work with and who I want to align with. But if it’s up to me, I’m genderfluid, yes we need to do work together. We need to band together and of course you’re part of my community.
The other thing to remember is this is not a battle of gay people vs everybody else or trans people vs everybody else. This is like the “we’re better than you”, heteronormative, homophobic, “normal” people that’s in every movie, every ad, every single bit of our culture, which has been dominate for so many years, being dismantled. Which makes me happy. And of course we all need to work together to do that.
So! Are ace and aro people part of of the lgbtQIAA+ community? Yeah. Of course they are. It’s a big tent, it’s a big umbrella. Let’s work together.]
Ace pride at Oslo Pride 2016 parade, in the capitol of Norway. We didn’t know beforehand that there was an ace group, but then @withmoore and I saw the flags and joined them immediately.
There were only about 20 of us, but between us we handed out 1000 asexuality pamphlets. I handed out at least 100 of them myself.
I was also bolstered by the amount of nonbinary, trans and bisexual flags I saw, and stuff like having the Oslo police force walk in the parade in solidarity.
Beautiful weather, lovely group of people, and altogether great day!
When somebody comes out to you about their orientation, “I don’t care who you date/fuck/whatever” is the woooorst thing to say.
When I tell you I’m queer, I’m not purely telling you “oh, I am attracted to people regardless of gender”. I am also saying “hey, I grew up surrounded by homophobia that affected me” and “oh, I worry a lot about my rights being taken away” and even “oh, I’ve been subjected to harrassment and violence”.
I am telling you something about my whole life, not just my love life.
Hell, that even extends to if I follow it up with “I’m also asexual”. It doesn’t just mean “I don’t have sex”, it also means “I grew up without the expectation of a long term romantic relationship being likely for me”, and “My expectations for and the reality of my romantic life are very different and complicated”, and more. It’s the reason I have never dated anyone, and that is a part of my life beyond “doesn’t enjoy sex”!
Our orientations help position us in society whether we like it or not, they impact how we relate to ourselves and others, they impact our likely life experiences. I don’t care that you don’t care that I’d date girls boys and everyone else too, or that I don’t look for sex in a relationship. That’s not what I’m mentioning when I say I’m a queer ace.
So you know how there are dating sites. Well i think we should have a friend finding site for asexuals. A whole site just for ace and aromantics alike to chat and search for others of their sexuality. To be inclusive and have their own “dating site”
“asexuals are only 1% of the population so they don’t matter”
wow yeah so theres only 72 million asexual people yeah you’re right like none at all ha ha
You know who else is 1-2% of the world population?
Redheads.
Yet somehow it’s not all that hard to put a “fiery” redhead in almost every fucking thing. Why? Because they matter.
If asexuals made up their own country then, by population size, out of the 196 countries in the world, the Asexual Nation would rank number NINETEEN right after Turkey and would bump the DRC down to twenty.
That’s just how many of us there are. Our hypothetical country would have more people in it than 90% of the current countries in the world.
But we don’t matter?
Bullshit.
Representation matters.
We matter.
All 72 million of us.
So let’s not play this fucking game, ok?
Also population percentages are always low estimates so there are definitely more than 72 million of us
Worst fear: finding out that I really am just a late bloomer or something and I’m no longer asexual/aromantic and having to tell everyone and them being like told ya it was just a phase therefore giving people more “proof” asexuality/aromanticism doesn’t exist gah
the thing is, it’s okay if it’s just a phase. It doesn’t give people “proof” because there are still millions out there who are aro/ace. If it is “just a phase”, it doesn’t matter, because aro/ace is how you identify right now, and people should respect that. And if you change your mind some day, people should respect that too
