dustflier asked:

Bog, what's the creepiest sea animal you can think of? Besides dolphins, of course.

bogleech answered:

That absolutely goes to Stygiomedusa gigantea (most photos by mbari:)

It doesn’t sting but the thought of this flowing, blind, black gelatinous being slowly flying through the vastness of the deep sea abyss is awe-inspiringly haunting

Especially because it gets thirty feet long

I used to be terrified of jerllyfish until I saw the anime Princess Jellyfish which prompted me to look into them more and while I’m still kinda put off by them, this one is by far my favorite. It doesn’t sting, but it smothers or suffocates it’s prey instead. They are massive and intimidating and beautiful *v* Like giant black ghost dresses

Can a computer wallpaper transport you to another dimension? This one just might. The “oven mitt jelly” lives in the open ocean, but looks like it’s from outer space.

montereybayaquarium:

Just in time for Halloween: another video from our creepy collection! This beautiful blob—also known as the Japatella octopus—is guaranteed to make you feel, well, gelatinous. Or something. Check it out!

And occasionally, thanks to our partners at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, we have them at the Aquarium. We’ll let you know next time we do!
