dustflier asked:

Bog, what's the creepiest sea animal you can think of? Besides dolphins, of course.

bogleech answered:

That absolutely goes to Stygiomedusa gigantea (most photos by mbari:)

It doesn’t sting but the thought of this flowing, blind, black gelatinous being slowly flying through the vastness of the deep sea abyss is awe-inspiringly haunting

Especially because it gets thirty feet long

I used to be terrified of jerllyfish until I saw the anime Princess Jellyfish which prompted me to look into them more and while I’m still kinda put off by them, this one is by far my favorite. It doesn’t sting, but it smothers or suffocates it’s prey instead. They are massive and intimidating and beautiful *v* Like giant black ghost dresses

giffingsharks:

The Tasselled Wobbegong is the greatest ambush hunter of all sharks. Its tasselled chin and intricately coloured skin allow this shark to perfectly blend into its surroundings.  It inhabits shallow coral reefs off northern Australia, New Guinea, and adjacent islands. The name “Wobbegong” means “shaggy beard”. These sharks have been seen ‘walking’ across one tide pool to another using their bottom fins to move themselves, as long as their gills are wet, they can survive the short trip.

What’s a nudibranch, anyway?

These soft-bodied mollusks are closely related to sea slugs!

image

“Nudibranch” means “naked gills,” referring to the fact that they carry their gills on their back. Here’s a closeup of nudibranch gills:

image

Many nudibranch species are spectacularly colorful, from the Spanish shawl nudibranch, found in Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary:

image

to the opalescent nudibranch of Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary, which preys on hydroids and anemones. During digestion, the hydroid and anemone stinging cells actually travel into the nudibranch’s colorful appendages and can be used against the nudibranch’s own predators!

image

Nudibranchs are found all over the world’s ocean and in many of your national marine sanctuaries.

What’s your favorite kind of nudibranch?

Sharing the love with a Hopkin’s rose nudibranch!
