A month before Anime Expo 2015 we decided to make Pokemon costumes! Specifically Charizard’s Mega evolutions, X and Y. We used a hollow foam body technique because we wanted the costumes to really convey creature proportions yet stay as light as possible. We first started out with looking at a bunch of Charizard concept art, screenshots, etc. and began mapping out how to put a person somewhere in there.
Custom order on Etsy. Props to the customer for choosing the colors. Not what I’m inclined to pick, but the end result looks pretty good, methinks. (And more importantly, she thinks so too!)
I actually remembered to save at each stage so I could do another series of progress shots :D
I missed the first step which is just a really rough outline to get the basic structure down. The neater lines are drawn on a layer on top of the rough sketch.
There’s very little difference between the last two images because I was going to post the second to last one as the finished piece but then decided to just darken it a little in places.
