“From Boys Don’t Cry to Transamerica, Dallas Buyer’s Club to The Danish Girl, Hollywood loves a trans narrative. After all, they’ve historically nabbed Oscar nominations, critical acclaim, and cultural purchase for forcing society to see gender and the struggles of a marginalized community in new light. Yet Hollywood’s love of trans stories highlights one blaring problem: its equal love of cisgender actors, whom the industry almost always casts to play transgender roles.
Earlier this week, it was announced that Scarlett Johansson would star as Dante “Tex” Gill in the upcoming film Rub & Tug. The film is based on the real-life story of Gill, a trans-masculine person; given Johansson is a cisgender woman, many criticized the choice as tone-deaf, given how much trans acting talent exists in Hollywood today.
Trans actors are more than capable of portraying their own community. And beyond moral or ethical arguments against it, Johansson’s casting highlights the inherent injustice of casting a cis actor for a trans role: It denies trans actors access to opportunities in an industry where they already face systemic discrimination. Pursuing a trans storyline with cis actors diminishes the multi-faceted, impossibly complex narratives of trans folk, and says we’re incapable of telling our own stories.
Trans people live our lives everyday, and our lives are not costumes. They are real and worthy of celebration. Here are just 13 examples of incredible trans performers working today, should there be any doubt that talent is what’s holding Hollywood back from giving trans actors the opportunities they deserve.
people are saying Peppermint can’t be a drag queen due to her gender identity….it’s time to remind ya’ll fools that over 15 contestants; including successful winners and faves were NOT CIS MEN and are doing well
Jumped all the way to Freshman year of High School
Then I cut my hair Junior year, why did I do that
Slowly it started growing back and then….
I finally felt comfortable to express myself (the picture on the left was my debut)
At this point in my transition I am 6 months into HRT
A year on HRT
Over a year and a half on hormones. My transition hasn’t been the clearest path but I am so happy that I am on it.
Update:
2 years since my coming out
2 years on hrt
2.3 years on hrt
2 and a half years on hormones
Its been a while since I’ve done an update so here it goes
At this point I am 3 years into my Hormone Replacement Therapy. I’m thriving.
These pictures were taken days apart and I am 3 and a half years into my medical transition (The picture on the right was also posted by Instagram on all their major social media handles attached with an interview I did with them for International Women’s Month)
During this time I was 4 years into HRT. Clearly living for it.
I am currently 4 and a half years into HRT, 5 years into socially transitioning, 6 years into when i first came out to my community around me and I’m loving life more than I ever thought I would.
I need to save that post to remind myself that “Heaven needs time to render”. SUCH AN INSPIRATION!!!
You know if you’re going to call me a transphobe do It in the actual post and not in the tags.
better?
Yeah. But sadly you’re wrong, I’m no transphobe.
are you sure?
Yes because your straw man argument is completely idiotic. Peter Parker, the well established superhero isn’t trans. It’s simple fact. If the creator wanted them to be trans he would’ve said so. Now I have no issues if you want to make this head cannon but don’t try to push it as fact.
pushing peter parker to be cis is also technically a headcanon
You do realize being cis is the default. You literally come out of the womb one gender or the other. You can’t be born trans. And how is a fact of the character headcanon?
to quote you, “I have no issues if you want to make this head cannon but don’t try to push it as fact.”
Canonically he’s cis since the wiki calls him a male. Not trans male. And him being cis isn’t headcanon that’s how to creator intended him to be. And when I say “you can’t be born trans” I’m saying you can’t be born as the opposite gender you were given at birth because if you were you wouldn’t be trans you’d be the opposite gender.
fun fact: transgender men have always been and will always be male
Elbe was a Danish artist and illustrator and one of the first trans
women to undergo gender confirmation surgery. […]
Her case became a sensation in both
Germany and Denmark and a Danish court invalidated her marriage to
Gottlieb. She was able to get her sex and name legally changed.
Elbe began a relationship with French art dealer Claude Lejeune, with
whom she wanted to marry and have children, and was looking forward to
her final surgery involving a uterus transplant, so that they could one
day have children.
With no medication to prevent organ rejection, she did not recover
from her final operation and died September 13, 1931 […] Elbe’s life is the
subject of the 2015 Oscar nominated film “The Danish Girl”.

Tracy Norman
Tracey “Africa” Norman was the first black trans fashion model,
though she hid the secret of her gender identity as she rose through the
industry in the 1970s. Norman was recruited for the Italian version of
Vogue and quickly became a model, appearing in magazines and
advertisements for such brands as Avon and Clairol. Norman said that she
only went into modeling to avoid sex work, which she thought of as the
only other outlet for a black trans woman from Newark, New Jersey, who
had just begun taking hormones.
Around 1980, an assistant on an Essence magazine photo shoot
who recognized her from Newark exposed her secret, and Norman stopped
getting modeling work after that. She worked abroad in Paris and Milan
before moving back to Newark, and only decided this year to tell her
true story.
Sally Mursi
In 1988, Egyptian Sally Mursi sent a shockwave through the Muslim
World when she changed her sex from male to female in Egypt. The case
led to such a crisis in the country that the Grand Mufti was asked to
decide on it. Muhammad Sayyid Tantawy, the Grand Mufti, released a fatwa,
making it spiritually legal for a transgendered individual to change to
his or her appropriate gender.
Martine Rothblatt
Martine Rothblatt is a lawyer, author and entrepreneur. She also

Pokemon have physical differences between male and female. Pikachu is far less subtle in its gender differences. Females have a heart shape tip to their tail, while males have that v shape.
Anyway here’s trans Pikachu.
Reblog to support trans Pikachu and how happy she is about her new gender-affirming tail
i never, ever thought another man could love me. not like this. i was convinced for years that being trans meant that i was unloveable and undesirable.
but you know that post that goes, “all i want is a partner who is way out of my league but thinks that i’m way out of their league and we’ll live together in perfect confused harmony with a dog”?
that’s us.
trans dudes who like dudes, especially if you’re young and feeling real hopeless–don’t worry, it’ll happen. you CAN find a man who loves you–gross, mushy, sappy love–who’ll nurse you through your surgeries, cook dinner with you four or five times a week, whose body meshes just right against yours… who, years on, still stuns you with your shared vulnerability and trust, with his laugh, with how you can see the freckles in his eyes when your faces are pressed together; with how your skittish pulse slows in his arms, or that when you’re both half-asleep, he’ll press a kiss between your shoulderblades and pull you closer to him…
tl;dr: being a gay trans man doesn’t doom you to a life without love. hang in there.
